Dunk is the largest member of the Family Islands. It was named by Captain Cook for his boss, Admiral Dunk, as he sailed by in 1770. The aborigines called the island "Coonanglebah".

We invite you to visit and explore Dunk Island.

The "Beachcomber" E. J. Banfield, known around the world as the "beachcomber", lived on Dunk Island from 1897 until his death in 1923. He was a noted naturalist and author. His books, The Confessions of a Beachcomber, My Tropic Isle, Tropic Days, and Last Leaves from Dunk Island had a large international following, especially in the United Kingdom. Banfield was the inspiration for the office worker's daydream of escaping from the urban jungle to a tropical island.

Birds Dunk Island, an offshore tropical rainforest, is rich in bird life. Banfield cataloged 129 species of birds which he observed in the period 1897 to 1906 when he first moved there. We are currently sponsoring the "Birds of Dunk Research Project" to determine how the bird population has changed over the past century. We invite you to participate.

Exploring Dunk Dunk Island is preserved as a National Park. It is 10 kilometers long and only 400 acres is privately owned. Its flora is luxuriant and there are many beautiful walks, beaches and views for the guest to explore.

The Artists' Colony The Artists' Colony is known for weavings, sculpture, carvings, paintings, prints, ceramics and jewellery. Collectors worldwide have commissioned art pieces.

Hopkins Family Spenser Hopkins of Townsville was Banfield's close friend and would visit him regularly and bring his family to Dunk to vacation. When Banfield died, he willed the island to Hopkins.
