The Artists' Colony
on Dunk Island

Imagine a fine tapestry woven for your home, imagine a set of china designed for you, imagine designing your own jewelry, using one of Australia's many stones such as the spectacular black opal.

Many people have commissioned art pieces through the Artists' Colony - a popular theme is the magnificent blue Ulysses butterfly that is seen on Dunk - and people have commissioned wall hangings, pottery, crockery sets, and jewelry which feature this theme.

The Artists' Colony is adjacent to the hideaway and guests will meet the colony director, Susi Kirk, who lives full-time in the colony with her young son, Zac. Susi is a silversmith and she works with many artists-in-residence. Zac takes the water taxi each day to school on the mainland. The founding director was Bruce Arthur who died in 1998 - his ashes were scattered in the ocean at Port Arthur by his beloved colony.

The colony welcomes a steady stream of distinguished artists who take up residence for a month at a time. The colony enables resident artists to refresh their inspiration and the artists often produce their most creative pieces while working in the colony.

The following is a listing of the art which the colony produces, and the artists who have participated as artist-in-residence:

You can't contact the Artists' Colony directly (it is a retreat and doesn't have e-mail facilities), but we invite you to e-mail our agent (thopkins07@DunkIsle.com) if you want to discuss a commission with the colony director or if you want to purchase any art work.
